Diggin the DIY: Hot Air Balloons

WELCOME TO THE IRON & WINE

We decided on a vintage world travel theme for our son's nursery. With that, we chose to showcase old world maps, globes, and patent prints of different transportation methods. As good as the nursery was starting to look, it still felt incomplete. It needed something more, something that just popped!

On my 30th birthday Nate took me on a hot air balloon ride while we were in Temecula, CA for a wedding. It was a wonderful experience and I knew I wanted to somehow find a way to pay homage to that memory. That's when I dawned on these adorable hot air balloons! So I have three different types I used and they are all super easy to make.

Option 1. From Scratch: Paper Lantern

Although the most time consuming, the scratch made paper lanterns are probably my favorite of the three. I was able to customize them the most and use scraps from around the house to reduce material cost. I used this video as my guide: https://youtu.be/KF9pRu-AaU8 but I did wish she had included a materials list prior to getting started. I wound up using:

  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Hot Glue Sticks
  • Empty Square Kleenex Boxes (1 for every hot air balloon you want to make), these are used for the frame of the baskets
  • Old Book (try to find one with G-rated language...more on my experience with this under the "Bad Mom Moment" section)
  • A roll of burlap (pretty sure you can find some at the dollar store, I got some on sale at Michaels that I wound up using)
  • White T-Shirt (to make the bags for the baskets)
  • Gray T-Shirt (to decorate the lanterns)
  • These White Paper Lanterns for the balloons (leftover from Reese's Unicorn Room Decor): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XWQ7MYF/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  • This cording for the baskets: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DKA3S6A/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_6

My BAD Mom Moment

Be careful which book you decide to pull pages from. I figured rather than go out and buy a book from Goodwill, I'd use one from around the house.
